Ubuntu

Overview

Ubuntu has a special place in my heart because of the wonderful humanist philosophy that underlies the whole Ubuntu project. I am a long-time developer of various types of applications in several flavors of UNIX, including Linux, Solaris, and HP-UX. I have now moved away from Windows and Ubuntu to OS-X for most of my home computer use, but I still use Ubuntu and I think the world is a better place thanks to this great effort at bringing the world together, harnessing the power of software engineers all over the world for the benefit of all, and empowering people in developing nations to use computers to better their lives and their communities by reducing the cost of software to zero.

I have followed the rise of Ubuntu for several years with delight. I love both the Ubuntu philosophy and the actual operating system. It gets notably better each year and has already surpassed Windows in stability and Solaris in usability. While I consider OS-X the pinnacle of desktop operating systems, I believe Ubuntu or another open source operating system will eventually match or surpass OS-X. This has already happened in the server world.
